During World War II between 1939-1945, the Battle of Normandy, this was from June 1944 to August 1944 resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the war began on June 6, 1944, aka D-Day when some American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-miles of the heavily fort o the coast of France’s region. The invasion was one of the biggest military assaults in history and required lots of planning. Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target. By the end of August 1944, all of northern France was liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe.
The night right before the attack Eisenhower told them that the thousands of war ships, military and civilian separated from English ports. They carried the assault force of one hundred and fifty-six thousand Allied soldiers through the English Channel. A marine of warships bombed German soldiers along the beaches. One hundred and thirty-five thousand men and twenty thousand vehicles attacked the beaches. A few days later, the Allies watched over the beaches. A few of the most important beaches in this battle are Omaha, Utah, and Juno beaches. The battle started when the British sixth air born separation went in at ten minutes after twelve o'clock in the morning. They were the first troops to go into action. The second attack was by the eighty second in the one hundred and first division of air born attacks. They were less successful than the first division that they did.
The air care plan included more than 6,000 aircraft with transports dropping three airborne divisions heavy and medium bombers attacking beach defences, and other squadrons on deception operations. German reinforcements coming to help defend the coast Layered screens of Allied fighters between the Parisian region and the Normandy beaches would ensure that German aircraft never touched the invasion area in daylight. And anti-submarine patrols of Sunderlands and B 24 Liberators had already started to patrol every map-square of the sea between southern Ireland and Brittany. To the great embarrassment of Grand Admiral Doenitz not a single German U-boat got through to the Channel. Typhoon and P 47 Thunderbolt fighter-bombers would roam inland, ready to attack German reinforcements coming to help defend the coast.
Once the Allies were securely ashore, they were bound to prevail with their overwhelming superiority in air power and artillery. German plans for a massive tank counter-attack against the British Second Army on the eastern side came to nothing when the Germans were hammered by the heavy guns of the US Navy and the Royal Navy off the coast. But the success of D-Day was not enough. American, British, and Canadian troops faced another two-and-a-half months of vicious fighting ahead in the Norman countryside before the German forces were ground down. Normandy was martyred in its suffering, but this terrible concentration of fighting at least saved Paris and the rest of the country from destruction. Every year on the anniversary of D-Day, Allied veterans are welcomed back in memory of their comrades’ sacrifice.
The purpose of D-Day was to stop Adolf Hitler’s plans. Hitler wanted to expand communism and it was very possible to do so from his progress. America, Russia, Britain, and Candida also wanted to free the Jewish from Hitler’s Nazis. The Jewish people were going to be extinct and that was inhuman to do so. America and allies also wanted to liberate the Western Europe such as the French from the cross fire of World War II. So, the Atlantic wall had to be destroyed and it was done so by key leaders, operations, and technology they developed. I have learned that America must always be on the alert for any attack and be watchful for spies in America. America allows people of any culture to enter and gain nationally that could be devastating to our government, so every individual person that is in America must be examined carefully to protect America’s secrets. I also learned an effective weapon does not have to be something engineered but, it can be a human that manipulates enemy’s plans.
