Imperialism officially started around the 18th century, ending around the early 19th century and is basically a policy which strengthened a country’s power and influence through colonization. European nations wanted to demonstrate their power and prestige to the world. The Industrial Revolution created an insatiable demand for raw materials and new markets.
Nationalism, or pride in one’s country, also contributed to the growth of imperialism. Citizens were proud of their country’s accomplishments, which sometimes included taking over foreign areas. (European nations were forced to acquire new colonies to achieve a balance with their neighbors and competitors).

Negative Aspects
- Africans lost control of their land and independence and were placed under the indirect rule of the British.
- The demand of cash crops caused a shortage of food which led to famines.
- Cultures and customs were broken down when traditional authority figures were replaced.
- African culture was replaced by the European culture through the educational system causing traditions to become lax.
- The British had control over the natives homes and property and the natives had no say so.
Positive Aspects
- African Products became available to the international market, allowing for colonies to become more prosperous.
- Resulted in improved sanitation and education.
- Literacy rate growth increased.
- Order and peace were brought to the colonies.
- Hospitals, schools, and factories were built creating more jobs available for the people of Africa.
